WHAT TO DO AROUND TOWN

ART

“American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity”

The exhibition explores developing perceptions of the modern American woman from 1890 to 1940 and how they have affected the way American women are seen today. Focusing on archetypes of American femininity through dress, the exhibition reveals how the American woman initiated style revolutions that mirrored her social, political, and sexual emancipation. "Gibson Girls," "Bohemians," and "Screen Sirens," among others, helped lay the foundation for today's American woman. Through August 15th.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street
(212) 535-7710. Visit www.metmuseum.org for museum hours and admission.

"American High Style: Fashioning a National Collection”

The exhibition marks the new relationship between the Brooklyn Museum and the Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition features 85 dressed mannequins by the first generation of American women designers and a selection of hats, shoes, sketches, and other fashion-related material that will reintroduce the collection, long in storage, to the public. Also included are works by French designers who had an important influence on American women and fashion. Through August 1st.

Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, NY. (718) 638-5000. Visit www.brooklynmuseum.org for museum hours and admission.
